Pakistan sealed a thumping 155-run victory over Hong Kong at Sharjah Cricket Stadium on September 2, Friday, and also qualified for Super 4 of the Asia Cup 2022. They will join Afghanistan, India and Sri Lanka in the next round of the tournament. Hong Kong, on the other hand, with two losses in two games in Group B, are out of the tournament.

It was Hong Kong skipper Nizakat Khan who won the toss and put Pakistan to bat first. Hong Kong had a bright start, getting the big scalp of Babar Azam in only the third over, holding the Men in Green for only 40 runs for the loss of one wicket in the six-over powerplay. But, then came the crucial second-wicket partnership by Mohammad Rizwan and Fakhar Zaman, which added 116 runs on board.

Fakhar departed for 53 off 41 balls in the 17th over, and then came Khushdil Shah. Rizwan and Khushdil remained unbeaten, scoring 78 off 57 and 35 off 15 respectively, adding 64 runs off the last four overs. Pakistan finished with 193 for the loss of two wickets in 20 overs. The pick of the Hong Kong bowlers was the off-spinner Ehsan Khan, who bagged two wickets for 28 runs in four overs.

Spinners rip through Hong Kong batting for dominant win

For Hong Kong, against a strong Pakistan bowling attack, it was all but over with a mammoth chase in hand in a do-or-die game. After a steady first two overs, scoring 15 runs without losing a wicket, things went haywire for Hong Kong, losing their first two wickets in the next over and losing two more in the fifth and seventh over respectively.

Pakistan had another two-wicket over in the eighth over, and with Hong Kong being stranded on 31 for the loss of six wickets, it was merely a formality for the game to reach its end course as it was well in Pakistan’s grasp. Hong Kong were bowled out for 38 runs in 10.4 overs, which is the lowest total in the history of Asia Cup.

It was Shadab Khan who starred with the ball, picking up four wickets for eight runs in 2.4 overs. Left-arm orthodox spinner Mohammad Nawaz also chipped in with three wickets for five runs in two overs.
