Indian Tennis ace Rohan Bopanna etched his name in record books as he became the oldest man to win a Grand Slam by clinching the Australian Open Men’s Doubles title on Saturday, January 27. Paired alongside Matthew Ebden, Bopanna beat the Italian pair of Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori 7-6(0), 7-5 in the final at Rod Laver Arena.
Following his achievement, the 43-year-old Bopanna left behind Netherlands’ Jean-Julien Rojer, who won the French Open men's doubles trophy in 2022 along with Marcelo Arevola at the age of 40. Notably, it was the first title of Ebden and Bopanna together after the duo lost in the US Open final last year.
The Indian Tennis maestro also got another feat against his name by winning his first Grand Slam doubles after 60 attempts, which is a record for most attempts before winning. Bopanna’s last and only Grand Slam win of his career came at the 2017 French Open in mixed doubles, with Canada's Gabriela Dabrowski.
The Bengaluru-born player also became only the third Indian to win a men’s doubles Grand Slam title after the legendary duo of Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes. On the other hand, Sania Mirza is the only one to achieve the feat in the women’s category for the country.
Bopanna also became the oldest player to attain no. 1 ranking for the first time in Men’s doubles
Earlier, he also became the oldest player to attain no. 1 ranking for the first time in Men’s doubles following his win in the quarterfinal. Bopanna’s best performance in his last 16 Australian Open appearances was the third round appearance which he managed six times.
On the other hand, for Matthew Ebden, it was his second men's Grand Salm doubles title. His first one came at Wimbledon 2022 with fellow Australian Max Purcell.
Meanwhile, the cricketing fraternity congratulated Bopanna for his historic achievement. Legendary players such as Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Anil Kumble, VVS Laxman and several others were in awe of his historic feat. Here are some of the congratulatory posts:
