Social media can make or break you, that’s the power it holds. While social media life is easy for a layman, it’s not the same for popular figures. One incorrect word, and they face the wrath of the social media users. And something similar has now happened with former New Zealand cricketer Scott Styris.
With the IPL 2023 around the corner, teams have started gearing up for the 16th edition of the cash-rich event. Ten teams will face each other off with one common aim of winning the prestigious silverware. One player, whom the fans are eagerly waiting to get back to the field is Chennai Super Kings skipper MS Dhoni.
The legendary wicketkeeper-batter is currently training at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, fondly known as Chepauk, in Chennai. The franchise recently shared a video of Dhoni entering the stadium for a practice match and the fans going crazy seeing him walk into the field, chanting ‘Dhoni, Dhoni!’.
The video has been doing rounds on social media, and Scott Styris too was one among the many who shared it on their Twitter. Reposting CSK’s video, Styris wrote “Still the big dog around town!!” with two clapping emoticons. Though he had not written anything negative and had used the phrase ‘big dog’ as an appreciation for the CSK skipper, the fans did not take it well.
Netizens called out Styris for the same and criticised him for using the term ‘dog’ for MS Dhoni. While Styris used the term to describe how powerful and impactful Dhoni is for all the stakeholders of CSK, Twitter users took the term in its literal meaning and went on to assume that the former New Zealander referred to Dhoni as ‘dog’.
Here's how several Twitter interpreted the term 'Big Dog' incorrectly
The fans who trolled Scott Styris then received backlash from CSK fans, as several users clarified what the term 'Bog Dog' actually meant, and how that stands apt in case of Dhoni. Several CSK fans came out in Styris' defence and stated that Big Dog did not mean a dog in literal sense.
