‘Divided cricket as well’ - Fans criticise Sourav Ganguly for controversial statement after Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill's ton
Fans assumed that Sourav Ganguly missed out Virat Kohli and shared the congratulatory tweet for Cameron Green and Shubman Gill as the former BCCI President faced criticism
Gujarat Titans opener Shubman Gill hit a phenomenal century against Royal Challengers Bangalore on May 21 to help his team win by six wickets at Chinnaswamy Stadium. After the completion of the match, many former cricketers lauded the youngster, including former India skipper Sourav Ganguly, who was highly impressed with Shubman’s knock.
Tweeting about the same, the former cricketer stated that IPL has created a new standard for the upcoming stars and also lauded the two stunning knocks in two halves of the game. This created some confusion among the fans as many bashed Ganguly for not naming Virat Kohli, who hit his 7th IPL century in the same game. Notably, Mumbai Indians all-rounder Cameron Green too hit a century on the same day and thus, fans believe that the tweet was directed towards the Australia international and not Kohli.
“What talent this country produces .. shubman gill .. wow .. two stunning knocks in two halves .. IPL.. .. what standards in the tournament,” Ganguly tweeted.
Notably, batting first, Royal Challengers Bangalore lost a couple of quick wickets but former skipper Virat Kohli kept going and helped the home team post 197 runs on board after 20 overs. He also scored two back-to-back centuries in the tournament and thus, Ganguly not naming him, unlike Gill, made the fans furious, especially when the two of them have been involved in multiple controversies in the recent past.
In IPL 2023 as well, Ganguly and Virat avoided shaking hands and that created a lot of buzz on social media. However, in the second leg, they were spotted shaking hands and since then, the Kohli vs Ganguly saga was quiet for some time before it resumed again. Nevertheless, Ganguly was bashed on social media again and was stated of dividing cricket.
Meanwhile, RCB are once again eliminated from the IPL race while Gujarat Titans will take on Chennai Super Kings in Qualifier 1 and Lucknow Super Giants will face Mumbai Indians in the Eliminator.
