Playing his 100th Test match, David Warner made the game even more memorable by notching up a century against South Africa, in what is the second match of the three-match series. Warner claimed a Test ton after a gap of almost three years and became just the 10th player, the second Australian player, to hit a century in his 100th Test.

He became the second Australian to do it after Ricky Ponting, the only player to record twin hundreds in his 100th Test, and entered a distinguished group of players by scoring his 25th Test century. Warner also entered another elite list, as he became just the second player, after Gordon Greenidge, to have scored a century in his 100th ODI and 100th Test.

During his knock against South Africa, Warner also crossed the 8000-run mark in Test cricket, becoming just the eighth Australian to achieve the feat. The opening batter has been under scrutiny recently for his form. And his issues with Cricket Australia over the leadership ban and its consequences are known to one and all.

With so much happening on his work front and in his personal life, Warner, ahead of his 100th Test, had said that he will bounce back stronger. Warner shut all critics and trolls and gave a fiery response by hitting the magnificent century. This was Warner’s first Test ton since January 2020. The 36-year-old went century-less in 27 innings straight before breaking the streak on Tuesday.

Warner lost his opening partner Usman Khawaja very early in the game when Kagiso Rabada got South Africa an early breakthrough. A confusion between Warner and Marnus Labuschagne led to the latter getting run out as their 54-run stand came to an end. The opener was then joined by Steve Smith, and the duo put up a brilliant 100+ run partnership for the third wicket.

With Australia nearing a place in the World Test Championship finals, Warner finding his mojo back is exactly what the team required at this stage. Australia top the WTC rankings and are very close to confirming the final berth.
