India and Sri Lanka locked horns in the big final of the Asia Cup 2023 on Sunday, September 17 at R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka won the toss and elected to bat first. However, he was later made to regret his decision as the Indian seam duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj were all over them with the new ball.

Jasprit Bumrah started the onslaught as he dismissed Kusal Perera in the very first over of the match. However, the real demolition of the Sri Lankan batting order began with Mohammed Siraj’s second over as he picked up four wickets giving away just four runs. The right-arm seamer accounted for Pathum Nissanka (2 off 4), Sadeera Samarawickrama (0 off 2), Charith Asalanka (0 off 1) and Dhananjaya de Silva (4 off 2) to leave Sri Lanka reeling at 12/5 after four overs.

Siraj further dismissed Dasun Shanaka (0 off 4) to claim his first five-wicket haul in ODIs. Apart from him, Hardik Pandya (3/3, 2.2 overs) cleaned up Sri Lanka’s tail to bundle them out for 50 in just 15.2 overs. Siraj finished as the pick of the bowlers for his side as he picked 6/21 in seven overs while Bumrah picked 1/23 in five overs.

India register their biggest win with 263 balls to spare

In the second innings, India started the innings with a new opening combination of Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill. The duo didn’t waste any time as Gill scored a boundary on the last ball of the first over to get the innings going. The duo continued to attack Sri Lanka to put them under pressure as they kept finding boundaries regularly.

As a result, India chased down the target in just 6.1 overs and won their eighth Asia Cup title. Gill remained unbeaten on 27* (19) while Ishan Kishan scored 23* (18). With their win, India continued their dominance in the Asia Cup by adding the eighth trophy to their cabinet while Sri Lanka have six titles to their name followed by Pakistan (2).
