Royal Challengers Bangalore continued their campaign in the Indian Premier League 2023 as they faced Punjab Kings in Match 27 of the tournament on Thursday, April 20, at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali. After being put in to bat first, RCB got off to a great start as opener Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis scored 98 runs in the first 11 overs.
However, RCB batters couldn’t capitalise on a brilliant start and could only reach 174/4 in the allotted 20 overs. Dinesh Karthik once again failed to give a good finish to RCB’s innings as he departed after scoring seven from five balls.
The wicketkeeper-batter has had a forgettable season so far, as he’s just scored 45 runs from six innings at an average of nine and a strike rate of 140.62. He failed to take his side home in their fifth fixture against Chennai Super Kings as they required 46 off the last 24 balls to chase down the massive target of 227 having six wickets in hand.
However, he was dismissed for 28 off 14 balls in the 17th over of the innings, which led to RCB losing the game by eight runs. Karthik also failed to collect the ball on the last ball in RCB’s third fixture against Lucknow Super Giants. Due to the misfield, LSG batters were able to complete the run on the last ball of the match and won the thrilling game.
The 37-year-old has had a completely contrasting season from the last edition, where he scored 330 runs in 16 innings at an average of 55 and a strike rate of 183.33.
RCB's bowlers make early inroads into PBKS' batting
Coming back to the match, half-centuries from Kohli (59 off 47) and Faf du Plessis (84 off 56) took RCB to 174/4 in the first innings. In reply, the Virat Kohli-led side made early inroads into Punjab Kings’ batting line-up as Mohammed Siraj picked two wickets in his first two overs, dismissing Atharva Taide and Liam Livingstone, while Wanindu Hasaranga also cleaned up the dangerous Matthew Short in the third over of the innings.
PBKS were 32/3 after four overs with Prabhsimran Singh (13* off 8) and Harpreet Singh Bhatia (5* off 3) at the crease.
