The inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023 has gotten off to fabulous starts for some teams, whereas that has not been the case for Gujarat Giants and Royal Challengers Bangalore.
In the ninth match of the tournament, Gujarat Giants went up against Delhi Capitals on Saturday, March 11, at the Dr Dy Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai.
In the four matches that Gujarat Giants have played in this season, the side has only managed to win once, against Royal Challengers Bangalore. As they took on Delhi Capitals, Gujarat faced yet another batting collapse as they only managed to score 105 runs in 20 overs.
Electing to bat first after winning the toss, Gujarat suffered an early top-order collapse and were reduced to 28/5 within the first 28 balls of the innings. Out of the 28 runs, 20 were scored by Harleen Deol alone. Kim Garth and Georgia Wareham somehow managed to drag the team past the 100-run mark with their scores of 32* and 22, respectively.
Laura Wolvaardt, who recently joined the side as a replacement for the injured Beth Mooney, only managed to score a single run. The entirety of Gujarat's batting line-up collapsed under the relentless attack of Delhi Capitals.
Marizanne Kapp was sensational with the ball as she took a fifer to dismantle Gujarat Giants. Shikha Pandey also struck thrice, whereas, Radha Yadav took a solitary wicket of Wareham.
As Delhi Capitals came in to chase the target, the top-order of the team put in an exceptional performance once again. Without losing a single wicket, Delhi were able to chase down the target quite comfortably. Skipper Meg Lanning played an unbeaten knock of 21 runs, whereas Shafali Verma was the star of the night as she scored an unbeaten 76 off just 28 deliveries.
Delhi Capitals won the game by 10 wickets to further add to Gujarat Giants' misery. Following their loss, Gujarat find themselves in the fourth place in the points table with two points from four games, whereas, Delhi Capitals comfortably sit in the second place with six points from as many games as Gujarat.
The Delhi-based side has been in sensational form throughout the tournament and are one of the biggest favourites to go all the way to win the inaugural WPL title.
