Regarded as arguably one of the best batters in the modern era, India and Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Rohit Sharma celebrated his 36th birthday on Sunday, April 30. Since his debut in 2007, the Nagpur-born batter has become a household name in India.
Affectionately referred to as ‘Hitman’ by his fans, Rohit has featured in 148 T20Is, 243 ODIs, and 49 Tests thus far, having aggregated 3853, 9825 and 3379 runs, respectively. He has scored four tons and 29 fifties in T20Is, 30 centuries and 48 fifties in ODIs, and nine tons and 14 half-centuries in Test cricket.
Apart from his impressive batting exploits, Rohit has also excelled as a captain. Since taking over the leadership reins in 2013 for Mumbai Indians, Rohit completed an illustrious 10 years as the skipper of the franchise in the ongoing 16th edition of the IPL.
The 36-year-old is also the only skipper to have won five IPL titles as captain (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020) while he is among the few players with a hat-trick in the cash-rich league, which he got with the Deccan Chargers in 2009 against Mumbai Indians at Centurion.
Further, only eight cricketers have breached the 200-run mark in ODIs and Rohit is the only player to have three double centuries (264, 209, and 208*) in the format. The current Indian skipper has the third-most ODI centuries (30), behind only Sachin Tendulkar (49) and Virat Kohli (46).
Rohit created history in the 2019 ODI World Cup in England, when he notched up five centuries in mere nine matches, the most in a single edition of a World Cup. He was also a part of the 2007 T20 World Cup-winning team as well as the 2013 Champions Trophy-winning squad.
He won the prestigious Arjuna award in 2015, the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna in 2020 and the ICC Men's ODI Cricketer of the Year in 2019. As he celebrates his 36th birthday, members of the cricketing fraternity took to various social media platforms to wish the ‘Hitman’.
