The first Test between India and Bangladesh ended with an emphatic win for the hosts. Both sides locked horns at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, on September 19, and the clash began with India posting 339 runs in the first innings after the brilliant knocks of Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin.

On day 2, India managed to put in a great showing with the ball, bundling out Bangladesh for a meagre total of 149 runs. To follow it up, the hosts posted a total of 287 runs before declaration in the second innings. Magnificent centuries by Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant meant that Bangladesh were set a monumental target of 515 runs to chase down.

Day 4 of the first Test saw Bangladesh batting on a score of 158 runs with the loss of four wickets. Najmul Hossain Shanto aimed to put in a good showing, but he was dismissed for 82 runs in the second innings, and India’s excellent bowling performances saw the visitors bundled out for 234 runs. As a result, the hosts won the game by 280 runs, gaining an advantage in the Test series.

One of the biggest highlights of the day was the knock of Najmul Hossain Shanto. The star batter had scored 51 runs by the end of day 3 of the third Test and he attempted to continue his showing on day 4 as well. Shanto went on to trouble India’s bowling attack quite a bit and played a knock of 82 runs in 127 deliveries before he was sent packing by Ravindra Jadeja.

Spin masterclass in Chennai

As Bangladesh’s batters looked set on the crease, it was the spell of India’s spin attack that ensured the win for the hosts. Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin, who impressed with the bat in the first innings, were just as impressive with the ball in the second innings.

Jadeja took three wickets in the second innings, bowling 15.1 overs and conceding 58 runs. On the other hand, R Ashwin looked exceptional as well, as he took six wickets in 21 overs, conceding 88 runs in the process. Besides, he also equalled the 37 five-wicket haul feat of the legendary late Australian legspin wizard, Shane Warne. India now lead the Test series by 1-0.
