Day 4 of the first Test between India and England at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium saw the game being done and dusted as the visitors toppled the Indian team and achieved a huge feat. The day began with England at a score of 316 runs with the loss of six wickets as the side aimed to maximize their lead.

Ollie Pope continued his masterclass and ended up scoring 196 runs in 278 deliveries. Furthermore, Rehan Ahmed scored 28 runs, with Tom Hartley adding 34 runs on the board as England posted a total of 420 runs in the second innings, giving a target of 231 runs for the Indian team to chase.

As for the hosts, Jasprit Bumrah was the highest wicket-taker in the second innings, with four wickets to his name. Ravichandran Ashwin struck three times, with Ravindra Jadeja taking two and Axar Patel taking one wicket.

Tom Hartley shines as India fail to overcome target

Aiming to chase down the target, the hosts got off to a subpar start. After skipper Rohit Sharma scored 39 runs in 58 deliveries, Yashasvi Jaiswal was sent back to the pavilion for just 15 runs. Furthermore, Shubman Gill was dismissed for a duck, with KL Rahul adding 22 runs to the scoreboard.

Englandโ€™s bowling attack overpowered the hosts as the Indian middle order failed to go big as well. KL Rahul scored 22 runs, with Axar Patel adding 17 runs. As the hosts looked to be in trouble, the partnership between Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj instilled some hope in the fans.

Bumrah stayed unbeaten on a score of six runs, with Siraj scoring 12 runs. However, England managed to bundle out India for just 202 runs, won the game by 28 runs, and took the lead in the series. Tom Hartley was the highest wicket-taker for England, with seven wickets to his name, with Joe Root and Jack Leach striking once each.
