Twitter Reactions: Spin makes all the difference as Bangladesh beat India after 4200 days in Asia Cup
Bangladesh beat India by six runs in the last game of the Super 4 stage in Asia Cup 2023.
India and Bangladesh locked horns in the last Super 4 fixture of the Asia Cup 2023 on Friday, September 15 at R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. India captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and to test his team’s chasing prowess, he invited Bangladesh to bat first. The decision was proven right by the seamers Mohammed Shami and Shardul Thakur, who picked three wickets between them to leave Bangladesh on 28/3 after 5.4 overs.
Axar Patel also joined the party dismissing the in-form Mehidy Hasan Miraz in the 14th over to leave Bangladesh in all sorts of trouble at 59/4. However, captain Shakib Al Hasan (80 off 85) played a brilliant innings under pressure and added 101 runs off 115 balls for the fifth wicket with Towhid Hridoy (54 off 81). The partnership was broken by India’s golden arm Shardul Thakur who destroyed Shakib’s stumps.
Nasum Ahmed walked in at number eight and played a brilliant knock of 44 (45) adding crucial 45 runs with Mahedi Hasan (29 off 23) for the eighth wicket. The duo helped Bangladesh reach a decent score of 265/8 in their allotted 50 overs. Shardul Thakur (3/65, 10 overs) was the pick of the bowlers for India while Mohammed Shami (2/32, 8 overs) picked up two wickets.
In reply, India also didn’t get off to a good start as captain Rohit (0 off 2) and Tilak Varma (5 off 9) departed cheaply with just 17 runs on the board. However, Shubman Gill and KL Rahul (19 off 39) got involved in a crucial 57-run stand for the third wicket off 87 balls. Rahul failed to get his innings going and was dismissed by Mahedi Hasan.
However, Gill continued his innings and added crucial 45 runs off 55 balls with Suryakumar Yadav for the fifth wicket. Bangladesh once again pulled things back by dismissing Suryakumar (26 off 34) and Ravindra Jadeja (7 off 12) quickly. But Gill continued to be the thorn in their flesh with his magnificent innings of 121 (133). He was finally dismissed by Mahedi Hasan in the 44th over, leaving India on 209/7.
Axar Patel was India's last hope
Axar Patel played a gritty innings of 42 (34) but got dismissed in the penultimate over of the innings, ending India’s hopes of a win. As a result, the Men in Blue got all out for 259 handing a six-run win to Bangladesh. Mustafizur Rahman finished as the pick of the bowlers for his side with figures of 3/50 in eight overs.
