Rajasthan Royals beat Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk by three runs.
The 17th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 featured a fiery clash between the four-time champions Chennai Super Kings and the Sanju Samson-led Rajasthan Royals at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Wednesday, April 12.
MS Dhoni won the toss and elected to field first. Coming in to bat, man-in-form Yashasvi Jaiswal failed to perform at Chepauk as the Indian batter was dismissed scoring a meagre 10 runs. However, star batter Jos Buttler played a resilient knock amassing 52 runs to his name in 36 deliveries.
Devdutt Padikkal, who was brought into the squad after a brief absence, played a good knock, accumulating 38 runs, and helped the side’s case further. Skipper Sanju Samson’s poor form continued as he was sent back to the pavilion for a duck for the second consecutive time.
Shimron Hetmyer, who remained unbeaten, and Ravichandran Ashwin scored 30 runs each to propel Rajasthan to a total of 175 runs after 20 overs. During the run chase, Ruturaj Gaikwad, who had been in sensational form so far, failed to perform, as he only managed to post eight runs on the board.
After the fall of the first wicket, Devon Conway and Ajinkya Rahane stabilised the innings, scoring 50 (38) and 31 (19) runs, respectively. However, Rajasthan made a quick comeback by dismantling the side’s middle-order. Ashwin played a big role in providing the side with major breakthroughs as the veteran Indian spinner took two wickets and conceded 25 runs in the four overs he bowled.
Ravindra Jadeja and skipper MS Dhoni looked to push their side to a thrilling win, playing quick-fire unbeaten knocks of 25*(15) and 32*(17) runs, respectively. Despite a shaky start to the final over, Sandeep Sharma managed to improve and successfully defend the target, as Rajasthan won the game by three runs.
Following the win, the Sanju Samson-led side took the top spot in the IPL points table with six points in four games. Whereas Chennai Super Kings now sit in fifth with four points from four matches.
