The Indian Premier League 2023 continued its incredible action on Thursday, April 20, as the fans were treated with a doubleheader. After Royal Challengers Bangalore defeated Punjab Kings in Mohali in the first match of the day, the action shifted to the Arun Jaitley Stadium, in Delhi, where DC hosted KKR.
After a rain delay, Delhi Capitals captain David Warner won the toss and invited Kolkata Knight Riders to bat first. The decision proved to be correct for Delhi as Mukesh Kumar dismissed Litton Das in the second over of the innings. Anrich Nortje further got the big fish Venkatesh Iyer in the fourth over giving KKR their second blow.
The matters got worse for the visitors as they lost their captain Nitish Rana in the sixth over, who got holed out to mid-on. After the seamers gave DC a perfect start, it was time for the spinners to come into the act as Axar Patel dismissed Mandeep Singh and Rinku Singh in the ninth and 11th overs, respectively.
With the wickets falling around, Sunil Narine also tried to retaliate by attacking the opposition, however, he got caught in the deep against Ishant Sharma.
Kuldeep Yadav also struck twice in the 15th over dismissing the well-set Jason Roy (43 off 39) and Anukul Roy off consecutive deliveries. KKR were reeling at 96/9 after 15.4 overs before Andre Russell scored some boundaries to take his side to 127/10 in 20 overs.
Axar Patel, Ishant Sharma, Anrich Nortje and Kuldeep Yadav all picked two wickets each for DC while Mukesh Kumar picked up one wicket.
In the second innings, DC captain David Warner came out in all-out attack mode and began dealing in boundaries right from the word go. KKR got their first success in the fifth over as Prithvi Shaw lost his stumps by getting chopped on against Varun Chakravarthy, leaving Delhi on 38/1 after 4.3 overs.
KKR's spinners kept things tight in the second innings
David Warner continued to attack as Mitchell Marsh (2 off 9) and Philip Salt (5 off 3) fell cheaply from the other end and went on to score 57 off 41 balls. However, he got dismissed in the 14th over by Varun Chakravarthy leaving Delhi at 93/4 after 13.1 overs. Furthermore, there was a twist in the tale as KKR's spinners kept things tight and further dismissed Manish Pandey (21 off 23) and Aman Hakim Khan (0 off 2) to make things interesting in the final three overs.
DC were 113/6 after 17 overs and further needed 15 to win from 18 balls. Axar Patel and Lalit Yadav played smartly in the final three overs without taking any risks and took their team home with four balls to spare in the innings. As a result, DC won the match by four wickets to register their first win of the IPL 2023.
Varun Chakravarthy (2/16), Anukul Roy (2/19) and Nitish Rana (2/17) all picked up two wickets each for KKR.
