The exhilarating action continued in the Indian Premier League 2023 as Lucknow Super Giants took on Mumbai Indians in Match 63 on Tuesday, May 16 at Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow. MI captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and invited the home team to bat first.
LSG tried a new opening combination as Deepak Hooda walked out to open the innings along with Quinton de Kock in Kyle Mayers’ absence. However, the combination didn’t work well for LSG as Hooda (5 off 7) returned to the pavilion cheaply after getting out to Jason Behrendorff in the third over of the innings.
The left-arm seamer further dismissed LSG’s star from the previous game, Prerak Mankad for a golden duck to give a double whammy to the home team. Wrist spinner Piyush Chawla further piled on the misery on the Krunal Pandya-led side by dismissing de Kock in the seventh over to leave LSG reeling at 35/3 after 6.1 overs.
Following the three early blows, captain Pandya and Marcus Stoinis got together at the crease and put on a brilliant 82-run stand off 59 balls for the fourth wicket to bail their team out of trouble. However, their partnership terminated as Pandya had to retire hurt on 49*(42) due to cramps.
After the captain returned back to the hut, Stoinis took it upon himself to guide his team to a good total and played a breathtaking knock of 89* off 47 balls with the help of four fours and eight sixes in his innings. Courtesy of his splendid knock, LSG posted 177/3 in their allotted 20 overs.
Ravi Bishnoi brought LSG back into the game after a fiery start from MI
In reply, MI got off to a fiery start with openers Rohit Sharma (37 off 25) and Ishan Kishan (59 off 39) adding 90 runs for the first wicket in 58 balls. However, Lucknow made a strong comeback in the game as Ravi Bishnoi dismissed Sharma and Kishan in back-to-back overs. Yash Thakur got the big scalp of Suryakumar Yadav in the 15th over of the innings to leave MI at 115/3 after 14.1 overs.
The hosts further got rid of Nehal Wadhera (16 off 20) and Vishnu Vinod (2 off 4) cheaply to leave MI on 145/5 after 17.4 overs. Tim David (32* off 19) brought MI back into the game by smashing 19 runs in the 19th over against Naveen-ul-Haq. However, Mohsin Khan did a fabulous job by defending 11 runs in the last over against David and Cameron Green and gave away just five runs, resulting in a five-run victory for LSG. Yash Thakur (2/40) and Ravi Bishnoi (2/26) picked up two wickets each for LSG.
