IPL 2024 Auction: Chennai Super Kings break the bank to onboard Daryl Mitchell for INR 14 Crore

Star New Zealand batter Daryl Mitchell was sold for INR 14 Crore to defending champions Chennai Super Kings during the IPL 2024 mini-auction on Tuesday, December 19 at Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai. The Kiwi batter came into the auction with a base price of INR 1 Crore and got bids from Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings and Chennai Super Kings. After Delhi got out of the bidding war early on, CSK and PBKS continued the battle raising Mitchell’s stocks with every bid.

PBKS finally opted out of the bidding after CSK raised it to INR 14 Crore and hence Mitchell was sold to the defending champions. Mitchell has been a part of just one IPL season so far in 2022 where he represented Rajasthan Royals. The 32-year-old played just two matches during the season and scored 33 runs at an average of 16.50.

Mitchell was seen in brilliant form in the recent ODI World Cup 2023 where he finished as the fifth-highest run scorer of the tournament with 552 runs to his name from nine innings at an average of 69 and a strike rate of 111.06. The Hamilton-born cricketer scored two hundreds and two fifties in the tournament including a brilliant 134 (119) vs India in the first semi-final at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Mitchell has been a consistent performer for the Kiwis over the past few years scoring a plethora of runs across formats. In the 56 T20Is played in his career, he has scored 1069 runs in T20Is at an average of 24.86 and a strike rate of 137. 22 with five fifties to his name.

Daryl Mitchell has performed exceptionally for New Zealand across formats

The 32-year-old was awarded Player of the Match for his match-winning 72* (47) vs England during the first semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2021. He further scored another half-century in the semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2022 as well against Pakistan scoring 53* (35). 

Mitchell has proven his worth time and again by standing up for his side during big matches. He will be expected to play a similar role in the CSK camp under the leadership of legendary MS Dhoni.
