A full house crowd at the Chinnaswamy stadium were treated to a masterclass in batting by their beloved former Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Virat Kohli, who registered a 35-ball half-century to ensure a brisk start for the home side against Lucknow Super Giants.
Faf du Plessis's team were invited to bat first in the contest by his opposite number KL Rahul. The home side got off to a quiet start after a tidy over from Jaydev Unadkat. However, former Indian skipper Virat Kohli cut loose in the next over, smashing a six and a boundary off consecutive deliveries.
The Indian batting superstar took a liking to Avesh Khan, dispatching him for two classy boundaries in his next over. However, it was his onslaught against English speedster Mark Wood, which send the fans berserk at the Chinnaswamy. Kohli smashed Wood for a boundary on the second ball and followed it up with a magnificent six over the mid-wicket fence in the last over of the powerplay.
RCB were 56 for no loss after the conclusion of the powerplay with 42 of those runs coming from Virat's bat, the most by the Indian star in the powerplay in an IPL encounter. While the LSG spinners put a halt on the scoring rate in the next couple of overs, Kohli breached the 50-run mark for the second time this season in just three matches. He became only the second batter to register a half-century against all the active IPL franchises.
He was looking in great touch before veteran Indian leggie Amit Mishra dismissed his former teammate with just his third delivery in the match.
