The incredible action continued in the Indian Premier League 2023 as Mumbai Indians locked horns with Gujarat Titans in Match 57 on Friday, May 12 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Gujarat captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and invited Mumbai to bat first in their home ground.
MI openers Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan got their team off to a terrific start as they added 61 runs for the first wicket off 37 balls. Seeing the game running away from their hands, the GT captain threw the ball to his premier spinner Rashid Khan and the wrist spinner did not disappoint as he broke the partnership by dismissing MI captain Rohit Sharma (29 off 18).
The 24-year-old returned in the ninth over and got rid of the dangerous Nehal Wadhera by dismantling his stumps. The Afghan spinner further returned in the 16th over of the innings and broke the 65-run stand between Suryakumar Yadav and Vishnu Vinod (30 off 20), dismissing the latter caught and bowled. Rashid finished his four-over spell with figures of 4/30 and got the Purple Cap back with 23 wickets to his name, leaving behind Yuzvendra Chahal (21 wickets).
Suryakumar Yadav scores his first hundred in IPL
However, despite Rashid’s brilliant spell, GT failed to restrict Mumbai to a low score as Suryakumar Yadav once again unleashed his beast mode at Wankhede Stadium. The star batter played a majestic knock of 103 off 49 balls, smashing 11 fours and six sixes in his innings to help MI post a massive total of 218/5 in the first innings. After his sensational knock, the Mumbai batter rose to the fifth position in the list of the leading run scorers of the season with 443 runs to his name from 12 innings.
