Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni once again lit up the MA Chidambaram stadium in Chennai with his monstrous hits during Match 55 of IPL 2023 between Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals. Coming in to bat in the 17th over, Dhoni walked to the crease with CSK on 126/6 after 16.2 overs and in desperate need of his finishing skills.
Dhoni played the first four balls of his innings quietly and later took on Khaleel Ahmed in the 19th over and clobbered him for two sixes and a boundary to make the Chepauk crowd go berserk. The wicketkeeper was finally dismissed in the last over by Mitchell Marsh, holing out to long on after a blistering cameo of 20 off just nine balls that helped CSK reach 167/8.
Earlier in the innings, after opting to bat first, CSK openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway gave a steady start to their side, adding 32 off 25. Their partnership was ended by Axar Patel who trapped Conway (10 off 13) in front of the stumps and sent him on his way back to the pavilion in the fifth over of the innings.
Moeen Ali (7 off 12) and Ajinkya Rahane (21 off 20) were also dismissed against the spin of Kuldeep Yadav and Lalit Yadav respectively as CSK were placed 77/4 after 11.1 overs.
Dhoni-Jadeja hit out DC bowlers
Following their dismissals, Shivam Dube (25 off 12) and Ambati Rayudu (23 off 17) added 36 runs for the fifth wicket off 19 balls to calm the nerves in the dressing room. Following their dismissals, Ravindra Jadeja (21 off 16) and MS Dhoni added 38 runs for the seventh wicket off just 18 balls to help CSK cross the 150-run mark. In the end, Dhoni’s quick-fire knock took them to 167/8.
Mitchell Marsh was the pick of the bowlers for CSK as he picked 3/18 in his three-over spell while Axar Patel registered figures of 2/27 in four overs.
