England were blown away by Sri Lanka during Match 25 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 on Thursday, October 26 at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru as they were bundled out for just 156. England captain Jos Buttler won the toss and elected to bat first to make the most of the good batting conditions on offer at the venue. Dilshan Madushanka almost got Sri Lanka off to a great start as he trapped Jonny Bairstow in front of the stumps on the first ball of the game.

However, they failed to review the decision and the replays showed that the England opener was gone for all money. After the early reprieve, openers Bairstow and Dawid Malan (28 off 25) added 45 runs for the first wicket in 39 balls. Angelo Mathews came to Sri Lanka's rescue as he gave the first blow to England, on his comeback to the ODI team after four months by making Malan edge one to the wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis.

Malan’s wicket opened the floodgates for the Three Lions as Mathews helped his side to get the second breakthrough as well, by dismissing Joe Root through a run out. Lahiru Kumara also got into the act and got the prized scalps of Jos Buttler (8 off 6), Liam Livingstone (1 off 6) and Ben Stokes (43 off 73) to leave England in all sorts of trouble at 137/8.

Kasun Rajitha got the big scalps of Jonny Bairstow (30 off 31) and Chris Woakes (0 off 4) while Mathews further dismissed Moeen Ali (15 off 15) in the 25th over. Captain Kusal Mendis showed great presence of mind as he hit the stumps at the non-striker’s end to smartly run out Adil Rashid (2 off 7) in the 32nd over.

Lahiru Kumara was the pick of the bowlers for Sri Lanka (3/35, 7 overs) while Kasun Rajitha (2/36, 7 overs) and Angelo Mathews (2/14, 5 overs) picked two wickets each.
