Chennai Super Kings' innings got off to a flying start in their crucial IPL 2023 encounter against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, thanks to Devon Conway's swashbuckling innings at the top of the order. The Kiwi opener, who has been in tremendous run-scoring form this season, showed no mercy against Delhi's hapless bowlers.
Coming into the game on the back of an uncharacteristically sluggish innings against two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders in his last outing, Conway looked at his fluent best from the get-go. He made his intentions clear in just the third over, dispatching Khaleel Ahmed for consecutive boundaries.
His young Indian opening partner Ruturaj Gaikwad also joined the party as the match progressed as the four-time champions started to up the ante against a struggling Delhi Capitals. While Gaikwad took the role of the aggressor after the conclusion of the powerplay, Conway continued to find the gaps at regular intervals. The southpaw also smashed the 1000th six of the ongoing tournament during his stay at the crease.
The duo registered their eighth 50+ run opening stand for CSK, the joint second-most by any opening pair for the Chennai-based franchise. Even though Gaikwad departed after a breezy innings, the southpaw continued to pile the runs from the other end, smashing 87 runs in just 52 deliveries. He was looking well set for a magnificent century but took the fall for his side in an attempt to uplift the scoring rate in the death overs.
