Australia started proceedings on Day 2 of the second Test in Christchurch at 124/4, trailing New Zealand's first-innings total by 38 runs. The tourists went on to take a 94-run lead before the Kiwis finished the day on 134/2, leading by 40 runs.

Matt Henry went from strength to strength on Day 2 as he kept asking some tough questions to the Aussie batters. After the visitors added 24 runs to their overnight score, nightwatchman Nathan Lyon departed for 20 as he became the fourth victim of Henry. A couple of overs later, Mitchell Marsh returned to the hut without troubling the scorers.

Glenn Phillips picked up the wicket of Alex Carey as the Aussies slipped to 189/7. Marnus Labuschagne, who started the day at an individual score of 45, doubled his score before being dismissed by Tim Southee as Phillips took a mesmerising catch.

Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins added some crucial runs before the world Test champions were bowled out for 256. Henry finished with spectacular figures of 7/67 in 23 overs, while the trio of Phillips, Southee, and Ben Sears bagged a wicket apiece.

In their second innings, New Zealand got off to a horrific start as Will Young was dismissed by Starc in the third over. However, Tom Latham and Kane Williamson led the fightback for the Blackcaps as they added 105 runs. The former New Zealand captain, who is playing his 100th Test match, got out after registering a half-century.

However, Latham played patiently and remained unbeaten on 65 of 154 balls at Stumps. Rachin Ravindra, who finished on 11 not out, gave Latham good company. The experienced batter was put down by Alex Carey late in the day and he would like to make the Aussies pay for the missed opportunity. Australian bowlers were very disciplined and didn't allow their opponents to score easy runs. The Kiwis have a lead of 40 with eight wickets to spare. The match is fascinatingly poised and Day 3 promises to be a mouth-watering affair.
