23-year-old Shubman Gill is currently in the best phase of his career. After smashing a cracking double-century in the first ODI of the ongoing series against New Zealand in Hyderabad, the Punjab-born cricketer once again touched the three-digit mark as he hit his fourth ODI century on Tuesday, January 24 at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore.

Batting first, Indian openers Gill and Rohit Sharma didn’t give any space to the Kiwi bowlers and started hitting boundaries right from the start. Courtesy of their electric start, the Men in Blue scored 82 runs in the powerplay and eventually set the tone of the get-go.

Gill, who often takes some time to settle down in the middle, didn’t shy from hitting boundaries and quickly brought up his half-century. Later, he wreaked havoc and converted it into his fourth ODI century, achieving the mark off just 71 deliveries.

However, Kiwi bowler Blair Tickner got the better of him soon after the glorious ton. The opener mistimed the ball while attempting an aerial shot as the ball landed straight into Devon Conway's hands. Nevertheless, he gave a perfect start, setting the tone right for the middle-order batters to build the innings further.

India’s skipper Rohit Sharma on the other hand brought up his century in 83 deliveries. Like Shubman, he too was phenomenal right from the start. The 35-year-old had been getting off to good starts recently but could not manage to convert it into a three-figure score. However, he finally made it count in the third ODI as the opener registered his 30th century in the 50-over format before being dismissed by Michael Bracewell.

Even so, Twitter users were more than delighted to see a batting masterclass from India’s openers. Heading to the ODI World Cup, this will definitely boost the players' confidence as Team India eyes lifting their first ICC trophy in 10 years.
