Prominent Indian industrialist and former chairman of Tata Sons, Ratan Tata passed away at 86 after a prolonged illness. Tata had been undergoing treatment in Breach Candy Hospital in south Mumbai and had been in intensive care for several days due to age-related health issues.
Earlier this week, Tata addressed concerns about his condition on social media, assuring the public that his medical check-ups were routine and urging people not to spread misinformation.
Meanwhile, he led the Tata Group from 1991 to 2012, transforming it from a primarily domestic company into a global powerhouse worth over USD 100 billion. Under his leadership, Tata acquired international companies like Tetley, Corus, and Jaguar Land Rover.
After retiring as chairman in 2012, he retained the honorary title of chairman emeritus for several Tata companies. Tata was also known for his philanthropic work and received numerous honors, including two of India's highest civilian awards, the Padma Bhushan in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008.
Tata was also known for his love of sports, particularly cricket. The former chairman of Tata Sons played a crucial role in supporting Indian cricket and its players. The cricket fraternity took to social media to express their grief about the demise of the business icon.
The likes of Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Virender Sehwag, Irfan Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, Mohammed Shami, Suresh Raina, Shikhar Dhawan, and many more former and current stars paid their regards to the former industrialist's demise.
"A man with a heart of gold. Sir, you will forever be remembered as someone who truly cared and lived his life to make everyone else's better," wrote Rohit Sharma.
"End of an era.The epitome of kindness, most inspirational, marvel of a man. Sir, you have touched so many hearts. Your life has been a blessing to the nation. Thank you for your endless and unconditional service. Your legacy will live on. Rest in glory, sir," wrote India's T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav.
