'Remember the name' - Twitter amazed after Ruturaj Gaikwad's third successive ton in Vijay Hazare Trophy
Ruturaj Gaikwad was eventually dismissed for a score of 108 runs off 131 deliveries.
Maharashtra's Ruturaj Gaikwad has sent the record books tumbling after registering a magnificent century in the Vijay Hazare Trophy final against Saurashtra. The elegant opening batter is in the form of his life, registering his third successive ton in the tournament. The Maharashtra skipper has now the most number of centuries in the history of Vijay Hazare trophy.
Ruturaj Gaikwad, who came into the finale on the back of a record-breaking double-ton in the quarter-final and a decisive ton in the semi-final, looked sluggish in the early part of his innings. At one point of time in the summit clash, the elegant batter had just 19 runs to his name in 61 deliveries. However, he turned things around in a flash, scoring 83 runs in the next 64 deliveries, providing impetus to the Maharashtra innings.
The century means that Ruturaj has now got four tons in his last five appearances in the competition, becoming the only player to have four centuries in one edition of the tournament on two separate occasions. This was also his 12th century in the Vijay Hazare trophy, the most by any player in the history of the tournament.
The 25-year-old cut a frustrated figure due to limited opportunities for the national side despite his impressive run in the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, he fired a shot of intent after registering a mind-boggling double century in the quarter-final that included a record-setting seven sixes of an over.
He was eventually dismissed for a score of 108 runs off 131 deliveries, finishing as the second-leading run scorer in this year's edition of the competition. His scintillating run with the bat makes him a prime candidate for a return to the Indian team.
