'Spin it to win it at Chepauk?' - Twitter reacts as Gujarat crumble against spin at Super Kings' fortress
Gujarat Titans lost wicket sin quick succession as they failed to absorb pressure
The Qualifier 1 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 featured a clash between the four-time champions Chennai Super Kings and the Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Tuesday, May 23.
Coming in to bat first, Chennai managed to post 172 runs through resilient knocks by Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway. Coming in to chase the target down, the defending champions were unable to put in a good performance with the bat.
Opener Wriddhiman Saha was dismissed for just 12 runs. With just Shubman Gill managing to score 42 runs on the board, Gujarat’s batting attack crumbled under the relentless pressure from Chennai’s bowlers. Facing a batting collapse, Hardik Pandya was dismissed for eight runs and Dasun Shanaka for 17 runs. David Miller and Rahul Tewatia only managed to add four and three runs on the board, respectively.
Chennai Super Kings qualify for 10th IPL final
In the end, only Gill was able to post some runs on the board during the run chase. Rashid Khan did look dangerous during the latter stages of the run chase, scoring 30 runs in 16 balls, hitting three fours and two sixes.
However, it did not prove to be enough, as Chennai’s bowling attack proved to be too much to handle for the defending champions. Matheesha Pathirana, Ravindra Jadeja, Maheesh Thikshana, and Deepak Chahar took two wickets each, with Tushar Deshpande striking once.
Through their brilliant bowling display, Chennai Super Kings defeated Gujarat Titans by 15 runs and made it to their 10th IPL final. On the other hand, Gujarat will now play the second qualifier against the winner of the eliminator between Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants.
Despite an early setback in the knockout stages, the Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat would look to make it to their second final in two years and defend their title in the summit clash.
