'Stay safe Chennai' - Cricketing fraternity stands in solidarity with people affected in Chennai floods

Chennai has been grappling with incessant rain since Sunday, December 03 as Cyclone Michaung is wreaking havoc in the city and its neighbouring districts of Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, and Chengelpet. The strong winds have been reportedly moving at a speed of 10kmph in the west-northwest direction and are expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm. 

As a result, the entire city has been experiencing severe floods leading to power outages and internet disruptions in several areas. Transportation has also been affected with numerous trains and around 70 flights being cancelled.

Several flights have also been diverted to Bengaluru from Chennai as the city’s Airport announced that it will remain closed for arrival operations. Furthermore, Bridge no. 14 amidst Basin Bridge and Vyasarpadi has been suspended due to safety concerns caused by high water levels.

“In view of water flowing above danger level, the bridge no.14 between Basin bridge and Vyasarpadi has been suspended on account of safety reasons," the Southern Railway said in a statement. Additionally, six trains originating from the Dr. MGR Chennai Central to destinations including Coimbatore and Mysuru were cancelled on Monday morning.

Five people reported dead on December 04

Five people have been reported dead in rain-related incidents on December 04 by Greater Chennai Police out of which two died due to electrocution while one person lost his life after a tree collapsed on him. The deputy director general of the Indian Meteorological Department, S Balachandran has indicated that heavy rains and strong winds will continue in Chennai until the night of December 04 due to the cyclonic impact.

Cyclone Michaung is likely to cross the coast in Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday, December 05 leading to torrential rains in the area. Meanwhile, the cricketing fraternity has also expressed their concerns for the people in Chennai with several players praying for the safety of the city.
