Australia and England continued their ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 campaign by facing off in the 17th game of the tournament. Both sides locked horns at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados, on Saturday, June 8. The game began with the Aussies coming in to bat first after losing the toss.
The side got off to a good start as openers Travis Head and David Warner scored 34 and 39 runs, respectively. Mitchell Marsh scored 35 runs, with Glenn Maxwell adding 28 runs on the board. Furthermore, Marcus Stoinis continued his form and amassed 30 runs in 17 deliveries as Australia managed to post a total of 201 runs in the first innings of the game.
As for England, Chris Jordan was the highest wicket-taker for his side in the first innings, with two wickets to his name. Adil Rashid, Liam Livingstone, Jofra Archer, and Moeen Ali took one wicket each as well.
England falters despite good start
Aiming to chase down the target of 202 runs, England got off to a flying start to the run chase. Openers Phil Salt and Jos Buttler scored 37 and 42 runs, respectively. However, despite the openers’ onslaught in the early stages, the rest of the batters failed to build further on the good start.
Will Jacks departed after scoring just 10 runs, with Jonny Bairstow only managing to add seven runs on the board before he was sent packing to the pavilion. Moeen Ali and Harry Brook attempted to stabilise the innings for England by scoring 25 and 20 runs, respectively. However, the same was not enough to win the game.
Pat Cummins and Adam Zampa were the highest wicket takers for Australia in the second innings, with two wickets each to their names. Josh Hazlewood and Marcus Stoinis took one wicket each, as England only managed to score 165 runs, losing the game by 36 runs.
