England registered their first win of the T20 World Cup 2024 on Friday, June 14, at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua, as they got the better of Oman. After their opening game got washed out against Scotland and suffered a 36-run defeat to arch-rivals Australia, the defending champions were determined to win this game. Winning the toss, England's skipper Jos Buttler opted to field first.

The decision to bowl first proved right for the former champions as they got four quick wickets under the powerplay. The middle order of Zeeshan Maqsood, Khalid Kail, and Ayaan Khan all walked back to the pavilion after adding just one run to the tally. Shoaib Khan was the only Oman batter to cross the double-digit mark but was dismissed after scoring a mere 11 runs off 23 balls. England bowlers ran through the opposition batting line-up as Aqib Ilyas-led side were bundled out for just 47 runs in 13.2 overs. Oman's total became the fourth-lowest total in the history of the T20 World Cup.

For England, the wrecker-in-chief with the ball was the 36-year-old spinner, Adil Rashid who bagged four wickets and conceded just 11 runs. Both Mark Wood and Jofra Archer also chipped in, finishing with three wickets respectively.

England creates history as they chase down the total in 3.1 overs

Chasing a mere total, the defending champions had a good opportunity to better their net run rate (NRR) and better their chances to qualify for the Super Eight. Opener Phil Salt showed intent from the first ball as he smashed the first two balls for massive sixes in the bowling of Bilal Khan. But Khan got his sweet revenge in the third ball as he dismissed the dangerous right-hand batter.

Jos Buttler found company in Will Jacks to chase down the total but didn't have a great day with the bat as he walked back to the pavilion after scoring just five runs. It was the duo of Buttler and Jonny Bairstow who finally helped England cross over the line. The England skipper was unbeaten on 24 runs in eight balls, smashing four boundaries and one six. The Three Lions eventually won the game by eight wickets with 101 balls to spare, making it the quickest run chase in the history of the tournament.

With this win, England now finds themselves in the third position in their group and has an NRR of 3.081 with one game to spare.
