Scotland registered their first win of the T20 World Cup 2024 on Friday, June 07, at the Kensington Oval in Barbados, as they got the better of Namibia. After their last game got washed out against England, the Richie Berrington-led side were determined to win this game. Winning the toss, Namibia opted to bat first.
The decision to bat first proved costly for the Gerhard Erasmus-led side as they lost three wickets under the powerplay. Malan Kruger also departed early as he managed to add just two runs to Namibia's scorecard. From 55/4, skipper Erasmus took the charge to smash the Scottish bowlers all around the park. The 29-year-old scored a well-deserved half-century in 31 balls, which included four boundaries and two sixes.
Zane Green tried to carry to momentum set by the Namibian skipper but managed to score a 27 ball-28. The star performer of the last game David Wiese also failed to perform with the bat as he scored just 14 runs. Eventually, Namibia ended their innings at 155/9 after the allotted 20 overs.
Skipper Berrington helps the Scottish side claim their first victory of the tournament
In the chase, the Scottish side started cautiously but lost one wicket in the form of George Munsey in the powerplay. After six overs the Richie Berrington-led side's score stood at 43/1. Despite their best efforts, Michael Jones (26 off 20) and Brandon McMullen (19 off 17) were unable to stay at the crease long enough to challenge the Scottish bowlers.
The onus was on captain Berrington, who needed to stay at the crease for a longer duration and not stop the run flow. And the 37-year-old played a captain's knock of 47* in 35 balls. Along with him, allrounder Michael Leask played a crucial role in handing the Scottish side their first victory. Leask won the Player of the Match award for his all-round performance as he also picked a wicket in the first innings of the T20 World Cup 2024 match. Scotland successfully registered a five-wicket victory with nine balls to spare.
