The Super Eight stage of the ongoing T20 World Cup continued with the West Indies taking on South Africa. Both sides locked horns in the 50th game of the tournament at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua, on Monday, June 24. 

The game began with the West Indies coming in to bat first after losing the toss. The side got off to a horrid start as opener Shai Hope was dismissed for a golden duck. Nicholas Pooran departed for just a single as well, with Kyle Mayers adding 35 runs in 34 deliveries. After the top-order’s failure, Roston Chase played a resilient knock, scoring 52 runs in 42 deliveries. 

However, after Chase’s inspiring knock, the rest of the batters could not amount to much. Skipper Rovman Powell scored just one run, with Sherfane Rutherford departing on a duck. Furthermore, Andre Russell was run out on 15 runs as the West Indies posted a total of 135 runs in the first innings. 

As for South Africa, Tabraiz Shamsi was the highest wicket-taker for his side in the first innings with three wickets to his name. Marco Jansen, Aiden Markram, Keshav Maharaj, and Kagiso Rabada took one wicket each.

South Africa chase down revised total after early setback

As the Proteas came out to chase the target, the side failed to get off the mark efficiently as openers Reeza Hendricks and Quinton de Kock were dismissed for a duck and 12 runs, respectively. Losing two wickets early as rain disrupted play. 

After an extended break due to the weather, the second innings was shortened down to 17 overs with South Africa getting a revised target of 123 runs to chase down. Skipper Aiden Markram scored 18 runs with Tristan Stubbs and Heinrich Klaasen scoring 29 and 22 runs, respectively. Marco Jansen stayed unbeaten on a score of 21* runs as South Africa chased the target in 16.1 overs, and won the game by three wickets via DLS.

Roston Chase was the highest wicket-taker for the West Indies with three wickets to his name. Alzarri Joseph and Andre Russell took two wickets each as well.
