The T20 World Cup 2024 Super Eight stage's second match witnessed co-hosts West Indies (WI) squaring off against England (ENG), at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in St Lucia, on Thursday, June 20. England skipper Jos Buttler won the toss and chose to bowl first. Being invited to set a total, the Caribbean side got a fiery start, smashing 54/0 in the powerplay.

Openers Brandon King and Johnson Charles gave a brilliant start as they both were smashing the opposition bowlers to all corners of the ground. Unfortunately, West Indies opener King had to be back in the dressing after being retired hurt to receive further treatment by the medical department. The right-hander hit 23 runs off 13 deliveries.

Nicholas Pooran, skipper Rovman Powell and Sherfane Rutherford provided final flourish

Scoring 38 off 34, Charles laced his knock with four boundaries fours, and one six. Just when things were going well for the former champions, Charles lost his wicket. In form batter, Nicholas Pooran and skipper Rovman Powell continued the assault as they stitched an important 43-run partnership of 23 deliveries. The West Indies camp lost two quick wickets in the form of Pooran and power hitter Andre Russell in back-to-back overs, stopping the run-scoring flow. Meanwhile, Sherfane Rutherford played an important knock of 28 runs off 15 deliveries to take his side's score to 180/4 in 20 overs.

For the Three Lions, Adil Rashid was the pick of the bowlers, ending with 1/21 off his four overs. Rashid was supported by Moeen Ali (1/15), who also delivered well and kept things tight from his end.

The chase began with an ideal start, as the required run rate was kept in check. Openers Phil Salt and skipper Jos Buttler continued their great form and took on the opposition bowlers as they posted 58 runs in six overs without losing any wickets.

Butler departed shortly after the end of the powerplay scoring 25 runs off 22 deliveries. The situation only worsened after Moeen Ali followed suit with a 10-ball-13. But Salt kept the flow of runs flowing from one end before veteran Jonny Bairstow too joined the onslaught.

Phil Salt smacked 30 runs off an over and Bairstow supported him well

Both the batters got the better off West Indies bowlers and smashed them all around the park. Particularly Salt who smashed Romario Shepherd for 30 runs in an over to help his side be on the winning side as the former champions won the T20 World Cup 2024 game by eight wickets. Salt smashed an unbeaten 87-run knock, while Bairstow also played an aggressive knock of 48 off 26.
