The encounter between West Indies and Papua New Guinea at Providence in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Group C match turned out to be an enthralling affair, culminating in a thrilling victory for the Caribbean side.

Batting first after losing the toss, Papua New Guinea faced an early setback with opener Tony Ura departing for just two runs. Despite the early setback, captain Assad Vala steadied the ship with a composed innings of 21 runs off 22 balls, supported briefly by Lega Siaka and then significantly by Sese Bau, who struck a fluent half-century, scoring 50 runs off 43 deliveries.

However, West Indies' bowlers, led by Andre Russell and Alzarri Joseph, put up a disciplined performance, picking up crucial wickets at regular intervals to keep the scoring in check.  Russell and Joseph claimed two wickets each, while Akeal Hosein, Romario Shepherd, and Gudakesh Motie chipped in with one wicket each, ensuring Papua New Guinea was restricted to a competitive total of 136/8 in their allotted 20 overs.

1. WI's powerpack performance

In response, West Indies faced an early setback when opener Johnson Charles was dismissed without troubling the scorers. However, Brandon King and Nicholas Pooran steadied the innings with a 53-run partnership before Pooran fell for 27 runs.

Roston Chase then took charge, anchoring the innings with a brilliant unbeaten knock of 42 runs off just 27 balls, guiding West Indies towards the target. Despite losing a few quick wickets towards the end, Andre Russell's cameo of 15 runs off nine balls ensured West Indies chased down the target of 137 runs with five wickets in hand and six balls to spare, sealing a crucial victory in their T20 World Cup campaign.

2. Papua New Guinea's standout bowler

Assad Vala was the standout bowlers for Papua New Guinea, claiming two wickets, but it wasn't enough to prevent West Indies from clinching victory. New Guinea gave put up a strong fight against USA but unfortunately their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign did not start on a good note.
