Chennai Super Kings (CSK) struck thrice in the Powerplay against Mumbai Indians in match 49 of IPL 2023 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Saturday, May 6 and dismissed skipper Rohit Sharma for a three-ball duck. With that, Rohit got his name associated with an unwanted record as he eclipsed Sunil Narine, Mandeep Singh and Dinesh Karthik’s tally for most ducks in the IPL, with 16 to his name.
CSK skipper MS Dhoni made the right call at toss and decided to field first as Mumbai made two changes, with Raghav Goyal replacing left-arm spinner Kumar Kartikeya, while Tristan Stubbs coming in for Tilak Varma.
In an interesting change in the batting order, all-rounder Cameron Green opened the innings alongside southpaw Ishan Kishan instead of skipper Rohit. However, the move backfired as Green and Ishan were dismissed 6 and 7, respectively. Mumbai pinned their hopes on skipper Rohit to rescue them, however, Deepak Chahar dismissed the batter in the very same over he sent Kishan back to the dugout.
Notably, Dhoni decided to come closer to the stumps for Rohit as Chahar bowled a length ball around middle and off. The MI skipper decided to play a scoop to counter Dhoni's strategy but played the shot early as the ball hit his glove and the catch was comfortably pouched by Ravindra Jadeja at point.
Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians have an impressive record of playing in Chennai, having won each of the last six games at the venue. It remains to be seen if they will be able to maintain their streak. They are currently placed on the sixth position in the IPL points table, with five wins and four losses in nine games. On the other hand, Chennai Super Kings have same number of wins and losses in 10 matches, but they have an extra point after their last match against Lucknow Super Giants was washed out.
