The opening fixture of the inaugural edition of the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 saw history in the making as Bangladesh got the better of Australia by seven wickets at the Willowmoore Park in Benoni on Saturday, January 14.
While the emerging cricketers of Australia were expected to win this one on paper without much difficulty, the Bangladesh team ensured that no such thing happened as they left the opposition shell-shocked by making their performances count on the field.
The victory has helped the Bangladesh's side to occupy the pole position on the Group A points table with two points to their tally and a superior net run rate (NRR) of 0.833, while the Aussies are currently at the second spot with a negative net run rate of -0.833 and would be hoping to make amends in their upcoming group matches.
Bangladesh begin their campaign in style
Australian skipper Rhys McKenna won the toss and elected to bat first. However, they lost their openers Kate Pelle and Paris Bowdler for single-digit scores before the duo of Claire Moore and Ella Hayward added 76 runs for the third wicket. Moore top-scored with a 51-ball 52 while Hayward contributed with 35 runs from 39 deliveries.
The duo’s dismissal completely applied brakes on Australia’s momentum and they were eventually restricted to 130/5. Marufa Akter (2/29) and Disha Biswas (2/25) were the pick of all the Bangladesh bowlers.
Nonetheless, despite chasing a manageable total, the Asian side suffered an instant setback in the form of opener Misty Shaha as she fell for a golden duck. Her opening partner Afia Prottasha (24) and Dilara Akter (40) then ensured that their team got closer to the target as they kept the scoreboard ticking and added 66 runs for the second wicket.
Even though the duo was dismissed, the middle-order pair of Shorna Akter (23*) and Sumaiya Akter (31*) took the responsibility of anchoring the chase as Bangladesh got over the line in the 18th over.
