Bangladesh and New Zealand locked horns in the second and final Test on Wednesday, December 6, in Dhaka. The home side won the first Test by 150 runs in Sylhet.

Najmul Hossain Shanto, once again, won an important toss and opted to bat first. Tim Southee introduced spin after just five overs and Mitchell Santner, who came into the side in place of Ish Sodhi, gave the first breakthrough when he dismissed Zakir Hasan. From 29/0, Bangladesh slipped to 47/4 as the left-arm spinners Ajaz Patel and Santner made good use of the favourable conditions.

The onus was on the experienced Mushfiqur Rahim to bail his team out. He found an able ally in Shahadat Hossain and the duo stitched a 57-run stand to calm the nerves. However, the veteran had a brainfade moment as he stopped a ball with his hand after defending it and was out obstructing the field. This opened the floodgates once again. The lower-order tried to hang around in adverse conditions but the home side was eventually bundled out for 172 in 66.2 overs. Mushfiqur top-scored with an 83-ball 35 while Shahadat played a handy knock of 31. Glenn Phillips and Santner bagged three wickets apiece while Patel took a couple. Southee took the final wicket of Shoriful Islam to wrap up the first innings.

In the second innings, Shoriful bowled the first over before Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taijul Islam didn't let go of the ball. The two spinners bowled in testing areas and the pitch got great response from the surface. Devon Conway was the first batter to be dismissed. He shouldered arms to a delivery that came back with the angle from Mehidy instead of spinning away and hit the off-stump. Fellow opener Tom Latham was dismissed in the following over by Taijul, caught behind wonderfully by Nurul Hasan.

Henry Nicholls couldn't last long and Kane Williamson was unable to capitalise on a lifeline given by Shanto at first slip. Tom Blundell was the last batter dismissed on Day 1 as New Zealand were reeling at 55/5, still 117 runs shy of Bangladesh's first innings total. Mehidy picked three wickets while Taijul had two in his kitty. By the looks of things, this match is heading for a quick finish. The ball is turning miles and is also keeping low on occasions. Batting will only get tougher from here on.
