Aiden Markram played one of the finest knocks in Test cricket history as he registered a fantastic century against India in the second Test at Newlands, Cape Town.

After being dismissed for just 2 in the first innings, Markram batted till stumps in the second on Day 1 and finished on 36 off 51 balls. South Africa were trailing India's first-innings lead by 36 runs, with seven wickets in the bank. The Proteas would have desperately hoped for Markram to convert his start into a big score on Day 2.

The hosts didn't get off to a great start on Day 2 as David Bedingham was dismissed off the last ball of the first over from Jasprit Bumrah. Wickets kept falling at the other end, as the pitch didn't show any signs of improvement from Day 1, where 23 wickets fell. However, that didn't dampen the spirit of Markram as he played some glorious shots to add important runs to South Africa's total.

The right-handed batter played counter-attacking cricket and helped his team knock over India's first-innings lead of 98. Markram went on to register his seventh Test century off just 99 balls. He steered Bumrah through gully for a boundary to get to the magical three-figure mark. On a pitch where no batter could score a half-century, Markram registered an epic ton that will go down in the annals of Test cricket. Virat Kohli walked up to the South African opener and congratulated him on his special feat.

Markram's innings eventually ended on 106 off 103 balls when he couldn't middle a slog off Mohammed Siraj and the ball lobbed up into the safe hands of Rohit Sharma at long off. As the 29-year-old was making his way back to the pavilion, he received a standing ovation from the fans in attendance in Newlands.
