Australia completed a clean sweep over New Zealand in the three-match ODI series after winning the final ODI at the Cazaly’s Stadium in Cairns. Steve Smith’s century alongside Mitchell Starc’s three wicket-haul proved to a match-winning performance in the end for the Australian side.

Earlier in the game, New Zealand opted to bowl first after winning the toss and Trent Boult yet again did the magic by dismissing Josh Inglis, who came in as replacement for David Warner. Aaron Finch’s poor form continued in his last match while Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne put up a 118-run partnership for the third wicket. Labuschagne was dismissed after a well-made half century while Smith kept going from the other end.

Glenn Maxwell, Cameron Green finish the innings on a high

Alex Carey and Smith then built up a partnership for the fourth wicket while Smith reached a fantastic century in the process. Runs came at a pretty slow rate, and it needed some quick boundaries from Glenn Maxwell and Cameron Green towards the end to take Australia to a competitive score of 267 for 5 in the end. Boult was yet again the pick of the bowlers with 2 for 25 in his ten overs.

Chasing down the score, the visitors got off to a decent start with a 49-run partnership for the first wicket as Devon Conway was the first wicket to fall for 21. Finn Allen played a handy innings of 38-ball 35 while Kane Williamson took his time to settle in. Tom Latham and Daryl Mitchell got to good starts but could not convert them into big scores and it added a lot of pressure on skipper Williamson.

A run-out saw the back of Williamson for 27 and half of the side was back in the hut with just 112 on the board. James Neesham and Glenn Phillips got a partnership going and the left hander, in particular, looked in solid touch for a 34-ball 36. Phillips was unfortunate to miss out on his half century by just three runs while Santner’s 30 wasn’t going to be enough in the end as the Kiwis were wrapped up for 242, losing the game by 25 runs.
