India and Australia’s tussle in the fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 continued on Day 2 at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), Sydney. Australia commenced their batting on Day 2 having lost their opener, Usman Khawaja on the final ball the previous day. Jasprit Bumrah again provided an early blow by picking Marnus Labuschagne in the third over of the day. The next on the line was Sam Konstas as he was plucked out by Mohammed Siraj for 23 runs off 38 balls.
Siraj did not stop there and in the same over, he picked the in-form Travis Head and Australia were brought down to 39/4. Beau Webster, who made his Australia debut with this Test, joined Smith in the middle. The duo forged a crucial 57-runs stand for the fifth wicket before Prasidh Krishna made Smith nick one to the slip after scoring 33 of 57.

Webster was resolute at the other end and he was accompanies by Alex Carey. The duo put 41 runs together and frustrated the Indian bowlers. Carey started to take matter in his own hands and started dealing in boundaries after digging his base. Krishna made use of his approach and cleaned him up, and the batter departed, scoring 21 of 36.
Debutant Webster tried to forge partnerships with Australia skipper Cummins and Mitchell Starch but was denied by Indians. Krishna picked him up for 57 of 105 and Australia wrapped up their innings on 181 runs as India took a lead of just four runs.
In the second innings, the visitors started on a positive note, but things went down south after KL Rahul (13 off 20) was dismissed. Jaiswal (22 off 25) and Virat Kohli (6 off 12) followed suit, courtesy of some lethal bowling from Scott Boland. A returning Shubman Gill (13 off 15) continued to struggle as Rishabh Pant played a brisk knock of 61 taking a mere 33 deliveries for his quick-fire innings. Nitish Kumar Reddy was dismissed for just four runs and India ended Day 2 on 141/6 with Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar batting on eight and six runs, respectively.

On a wicket where majority of the batters have batted at a SR of 50 or less, @RishabhPant17's knock with a SR of 184 is truly remarkable. He has rattled Australia from ball one. It is always entertaining to watch him bat. What an impactful innings!#AUSvIND pic.twitter.com/rU3L7OL1UX

Let’s respect Rohit Sharma’s judgment and leave the speculation aside, he has always put the team and the country above himself.

Whether he plays on or decides to step away is his decision alone—he knows best about his game and performance. @ImRo45 #RohitSharma #AUSvIND
