Team India registered a historic win in the second Test of the series against South Africa on Thursday, January 04 at Newlands, Cape Town as they beat the hosts by seven wickets. Needing 79 runs to win in the fourth innings, captain Rohit Sharma (16*) and Shreyas Iyer (4*) saw their team home as India levelled the series 1-1 and won their first-ever Test in Cape Town.

Chasing a small target, openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma got their team off to a brisk start, adding 44 runs for the first wicket off just 34 balls. Jaiswal took the attack right from the word go and scored 28 off 23 balls before holing out to deep square leg. Shubman Gill (10 off 11) also departed cheaply dragging a bottom edge back onto the stumps, while Virat Kohli (12 off 11) got strangled down the leg side.

Earlier in the day, South Africa resumed their innings on the overnight score of 62/3 trailing India by 36 runs with David Bedingham (7*) and Aiden Markram (36*) at the crease. Jasprit Bumrah got into the act in the first over itself, removing Bedingham for 11. He further got rid of Kyle Verreynne (9 off 7) Marco Jansen (11 off 9) and Keshav Maharaj (3 off 4) to complete his ninth five-wicket haul of his Test career.

Notably, it was the second consecutive fifer for the Indian speedster in Cape Town as he left South Africa reeling at 111/7 leading India by 13 runs. After a flurry of wickets, a well-set Markram shifted gears and began dealing in boundaries. He even got a life on 73 as he got dropped by KL Rahul and went on to score his seventh Test hundred.
