Australia clinched a thriller against New Zealand by two wickets at Cazaly's Stadium, Cairns to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. Cameron Green and Alex Carey put on a great show with the bat for the Men in Yellow.

Earlier in the game, Australia opted to bowl first after winning the toss and a blinder of a catch at point region from Glenn Maxwell sent back Martin Guptill for just six runs. Devon Conway and Kane Williamson saw off the new ball by taking their time initially and put on an 81-run partnership for the second wicket until Conway perished for 46. Williamson, despite putting the hard yards in, was removed for 45 off 71 balls and New Zealand needed some quick runs desperately.

The likes of Tom Latham (43) and Daryl Mitchell (26) got the innings moving with a brisk partnership, however, once the duo was dismissed, it was up to the lower middle order to provide the finishing kick. Contributions from James Neesham (16) and Mitchell Santner (13) helped the Kiwis to a score of 232/9 in 50 overs. Maxwell was the pick of the bowlers for Australia with 4/52 in his 10 overs while Josh Hazlewood picked up three wickets in his spell.

Trent Boult's new-ball spell leaves Australia in disarray

Chasing the moderate score, Australia were sent on to the backfoot straightaway with Trent Boult coming up with an amazing spell of swing bowling. The left-arm seamer picked up Aaron Finch, Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne within the seventh over. Matt Henry joined the party as David Warner pulled one straight into the hands of the deep square leg fielder. Marcus Stoinis was cleaned up by Henry few balls later to leave the hosts reeling at 44 for 5.

Alex Carey (85) and Cameron Green steadied the ship with a fantastic 158-run partnership for the sixth wicket and bailed the side out of trouble. However, the visitors came back strong and picked up three wickets in a hurry to leave the Australian side at 207 for 8. Green kept his nerve till the end despite facing cramps, to remain unbeaten on 89 and proved to be a hero for the hosts, while Adam Zampa played a crucial hand with an unbeaten 13.
