After England failed to qualify for the finals of the T20 World Cup 2024, there was plenty of chatter concerning Jos Buttler’s form and, most importantly, his captaincy. The team management sacrificed the seniors, as Moeen Ali and Jonny Bairstow were no longer considered for selection. Still, they trusted Buttler and also backed him to lead the team until the upcoming Champions Trophy.

Buttler was out with a calf injury and missed many key series before making a return against the West Indies. In the first T20I, the keeper-batter failed to make a mark, as he departed for a golden duck. Buttler wreaked havoc in the second, smashing 83 runs off 45 deliveries. He powered England to an incredible seven-wicket victory, and England are now leading 2-0 in the five-match series.

Notably, batting first, the hosts posted 158 runs on board. Saqib Mahmood got the better of Brandon King in the second over of the game and following which, England managed to pick wickets at regular intervals. West Indies skipper Rovman Powell made 43 runs off 41 deliveries while Romario Shepherd played a cameo of 22 off 11. Meanwhile, Mahmood, Liam Livingstone and Dan Mousley picked up two wickets each for England.

When it came to the chase, Akeal Hosein picked up Phil Salt's wicket in the first ball itself. With that, England were put on the back foot but Buttler took care of the business, scoring a half-century. Opener Will Jacks supported him well in the middle, scoring 38 runs off 29 deliveries. Meanwhile, after Buttler departed, Livingstone played a cameo of 23* runs off 11 balls as the visitors picked up a comfortable win.

England’s approach was also exemplary. They chased the total down with 31 deliveries remaining and that should give the team plenty of confidence. West Indies bowlers meanwhile had a hard time and that is one area that the team management needs to work on ahead of the last three games of the series.
