Australia and West Indies clashed in the second ODI of the ongoing three-match series at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), in Sydney. West Indies captain, Shai Hope, won the toss and opted to bowl first.
After a shaky start with five wickets down for just 91 runs, it seemed Australia might be bundled out for a low score which would have presented an opportunity for West Indies to try and level the series, after trailing by a 0-1 margin due to the defeat in first ODI. However, resilient contributions from the middle and lower order, including Matthew Short, Aaron Hardie, Sean Abbott, and Will Sutherland, ensured Australia posted a competitive total, reaching 258 runs in their allotted 50 overs.
Notably, Sean Abbott scored 69, while Matthew Short contributed 41. For West Indies, Motie stood out as the pick of the bowlers, taking three crucial wickets. In the pursuit of the target, the West Indies team never seemed in control, losing wickets at regular intervals. They faced a poor start, losing three crucial wickets within the first ten overs.
Later, captain Shai Hope attempted to stabilize the innings with Keacy Carty, but West Indies' efforts fell short. Australian bowlers, particularly Sean Abbott and Josh Hazlewood, were too formidable. Abbott and Hazlewood both claimed three wickets each, with Will Sutherland securing two. Aaron Hardie and Adam Zampa took one wicket each. With this win, Australia took a 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series, securing the series victory. Looking ahead, it remains to be seen if the West Indies can prevent a whitewash or if the mighty Australian team will continue its winning streak in the upcoming game.
