South Africa finished Day 2 well ahead of India in the first innings as Dean Elgar scored a magnificent hundred to take his team to 256/5 at stumps on Day 2. The opening batter remained unbeaten on 140* (211) and held the Proteas' innings together after India were bundled out for 245 earlier in the day.

The day began with India resuming their innings on the overnight score of 208/8. KL Rahul, who was unbeaten on 70, added quick runs in the first session and reached his 8th Test ton (101 off 137). Notably, it was his second consecutive hundred in Centurion having scored earlier in 2021 as well.  The tail couldn’t contribute much and India were eventually all out for 245.

In reply, South Africa lost Aiden Markram early in the innings as he ended up edging one straight to KL Rahul in the fourth over. His dismissal brought Tony de Zorzi to the crease who held one end as Dean Elgar kept the scoreboard moving from the other.

The duo 93 runs for the second wicket before Jasprit Bumrah broke their stand by dismissing de Zorzi in the second session. Notably, Virat Kohli had used Stuart Broad’s trick of flipping the bails ahead of the over which surprisingly worked in India’s favour and got them the wicket.

Bumrah further destroyed Keegan Pietersen’s stumps in his next over to bring South Africa on 113/3. However, runs kept flowing from the other end as Elgar completed his 14th Test century. He was well supported by David Bedingham who also scored a brilliant fifty (56 off 87) on his debut. The duo got involved in a massive 131-run stand to suck the juice out of India’s bowling attack.

India managed to get two wickets late in the Day

Mohammed Siraj brought his side back in the game late in the day as he cleaned up Bedingham while Prasidh Krishna got his maiden Test wicket by getting Kyle Verreynne caught behind. Bad light once again played spoilsport and the game had to be called off early on Day 2 as well. As a result, South Africa finished Day 2 on 256/5 with Dean Elgar and Marco Jansen at the crease.
