Adelaide Strikers won their maiden Women’s Big Bash League title by beating Sydney Sixers in the final of the eighth edition on November 26, Saturday at the North Sydney Oval in Sydney. Deandra Dottin’s half-century in the first innings followed by some excellent bowling up front from the Adelaide Strikers bowlers did the trick eventually.
Earlier in the game, Adelaide Strikers opted to bat first after winning the toss and the opening partnership of 51 runs set the tone for a good total to be posted. Laura Wolvaardt’s 16-ball 15 came to an end in the seventh over while Katie Mack perished after a 26-ball 31 in the very next over. But skipper Tahlia McGrath and Deandra Dottin stitched a crucial partnership to accelerate the momentum.
Bridget Patterson and Madeline Penna were dismissed early while the set batter Dottin joined hands with wicketkeeper-batter Tegan McPharlin to provide the finishing touch to the innings.
Dottin hit six fours and two sixes to complete an important half-century and stepped up for the side when they needed her the most. In the end, Adelaide Strikers finished with 147 for 5 in their 20 overs on the back of Dottin’s unbeaten 52 off just 37 balls. Sophie Ecclestone was the pick of the bowlers for the Sydney Sixers with 2 for 19 in her four overs.
Sydney Sixers lose four wickets inside first six overs
In reply, Sixers got off to a horrible start and lost four wickets with just 16 runs on board inside the first six overs and it needed a lot of stitching work from skipper Ellyse Perry and Nicole Bolton to get the run chase back in place. The pair added 60 runs for the fifth wicket, however, both batters were then removed in quick succession only to leave Sixers' hopes in a spot of bother.
Ecclestone and Maitlan Brown tried their hearts out in the final overs by hitting some lusty blows but it all went in vain as Strikers won the final by ten runs and clinched their first title and it didn't transform into a fairytale finish for Nicole Bolton, who has hung her playing boots. Sixers' Ashleigh Gardner was adjudged the Player of the Tournament for scoring 339 runs and taking 23 wickets.
