The 23rd match of the T20 World Cup 2022 saw India squaring off against the Netherlands at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). It looked like a high-scoring game given the previous match’s results at the venue, but the Indian batters struggled to get going initially. Nevertheless, the Men in Blue dominated the show and bagged an impressive 56-run victory.

India won the toss and elected to bat first. Minutes before the clash, South Africa had won the game at the same venue after posting a huge total of 205 runs. India’s start to the innings did not go as planned, as opener KL Rahul perished very early in the powerplay after scoring just nine runs off 12 deliveries. Had he taken the review, the umpire would have overturned his decision but because he didn’t, Netherlands got the first breakthrough.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli then steadied the innings, but they could not maintain a high run rate and struggled to score runs. They kept going strong till the first half of the innings and stitched up a 73-run partnership for the second wicket and the skipper Rohit Sharma (53 off 39) also bagged a half-century before being dismissed by Fred Klaassen.

What followed next was a Virat Kohli-Suryakumar Yadav special. The duo batted for the remaining eight overs and added 95 runs for the third-wicket partnership. They bagged their respective half-centuries on the way to leading India to a winning total towards the end. While Kohli (62* off 44) completed his half-century in the 17th over, Yadav (51* off 25) finished off the innings with a six off the final delivery and completed his half-century as India posted a target of 180 runs.

Netherlands’ start to the innings was sluggish, and they also lost their opening batters Vikramjit Singh and Max O’Dowd in the powerplay, courtesy of the experienced Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Axar Patel respectively. Bas de Leede and Colin Ackermann stitched up a partnership then, and tried to anchor the innings, but the Indian bowlers did not allow them many opportunities to score.

The Men in Blue kept picking up wickets at regular intervals and dominated the second innings completely. While Axar Patel registered figures of 2/18 in his four-over spell, Ravichandran Ashwin registered 2/21 in his quota. Almost every bowler ended with at least one wicket, and India clinched their second consecutive win of the tournament after defeating the Netherlands by 56 runs.
