Twitter Reactions: England breeze past Sri Lanka with comfortable first Test win
England defeated Sri Lanka by five wickets in the first Test.
Day 4 of the first Test between England and Sri Lanka saw the hosts register a comfortable victory. The third day of the clash left Sri Lanka on a score of 204 runs with the loss of six wickets and a lead of 82 runs as well. With the start of Day 4, Sri Lanka managed to post a reasonable target for England.
The visitors managed to post a total of 326 runs in the second innings as Kamindu Mendis scored 113 runs in 185 deliveries. As for England, Matthew Potts and Chris Woakes were the highest wicket-takers in the second innings, with three wickets to their names. Gus Atkinson took two wickets, with Mark Wood and Shoaib Bashir striking once each.
Aiming to chase down the total, England managed to breeze past Sri Lanka. With a target of 205 runs, the hosts opened their innings with Ben Duckett and Dan Lawrence scoring 11 and 34 runs, respectively. Furthermore, skipper Ollie Pope added six runs to the scoreboard.

Veteran batter Joe Root was the star of the run chase with an unbeaten knock of 62 runs in 128 balls. Harry Brook and Jamie Smith added 32 and 39 runs on the board, respectively, with Chris Woakes scoring 8* runs as England chased the target and won the game by five wickets.
As for Sri Lanka, Asitha Fernando and Prabath Jayasuriya were the highest wicket-takers for the side, with two wickets each to their names; Milan Rathnayake took one wicket as well.
Having secured a win in the first Test, England will quickly look to shift their focus to the upcoming clash. Both England and Sri Lanka will take on each other in the second Test at the Lord’s Cricket Ground on August 29.
