Day 3 of the third Ashes 2023 Test was full of ups and downs for both England and Australia. With rain disrupting play throughout the day, the proceedings were shortened massively. The Aussies began Day 3 with Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh at the crease for a score of 116 runs with the loss of four wickets.
With rain affecting the conditions severely, England did their best to bundle Australia out as quickly as possible. Mitchell Marsh was sent packing quite early into the Day for just 28 runs by Chris Woakes.
Furthermore, it was the Mark Wood show as the lower order of Australia's batting lineup came out to play. Alex Carey only managed to add five runs on the board, Mitchell Starc scored 16 runs, and Todd Murphy added 11 runs, As a result, Australia scored 224 runs in their second innings to set up the remaining days perfectly as England aimed to chase down a target of 251 runs.
Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes were the highest wicket takers for England in the second innings as both pacers took three wickets each. Furthermore, Mark Wood and Moeen Ali took two wickets each.
England need 251 runs to win third Test
In a day filled with weather-affecting conditions, England and Australia did manage to pull off one session of cricket. As the Aussie batters were bundled out for 224 runs, England found themselves with a target of 251 runs to chase down in the two remaining days of the third Ashes Test.
Aiming to chase the target down, Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett came out to bat. By the time the proceedings of Day 3 came to an end, England found themselves at a score of 27 runs with the loss of no wickets. With Crawley batting at 9* runs and Duckett batting at 18* runs, England would be hoping for the openers to build upon the good start and set the path for the team's victory on Day 4.

Those 5 overs to end the day probably sum up Australia’s performance in this 3rd Test, most players not switched on & not in the correct mindset to win a test match #Ashes #Ashes23 #ENGvAUS

That’s a brilliant, potentially match-winning, Ashes-saving catch by Brook. 🔥#harrybrook #Ashes #Ashes2023 pic.twitter.com/4VOovyvgds

Well done Crawley, looked great there. Duckett struggled through, but a more key player if conditions are better for batting tomorrow. Huge advantage now. One great session away. Also, well done Headingley groundstaff 👏🏻 #Ashes

So all that time in rain delay and the Aussies come out and crumble worse than anyone would imagine !! #Ashes

All the luck with England whether it's weather or slip catching. One ball goes above the head of slips and others fall short. Australia has to work really really hard to win from this or to make this difficult for england to win this.#ENGvAUS#Ashes #Ashes2023
