The breathtaking action continued in the ongoing ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 as England and Pakistan locked horns in the last game of the Group 2 on February 21 (Tuesday).
England captain Heather Knight won the toss and elected to bat first at Newlands, Cape Town but her team did not get off to the best of the starts as they lost opener Sophia Dunkley (2 off 5) in the second over. The Three Lions then lost Alice Capsey cheaply in the fifth over and were 33/2 after 4.2 overs.
However, Danielle Wyatt and Nat Sciver-Brunt took their team out of the early trouble and got involved in a brilliant 74-run stand off just 42 balls for the third wicket. The partnership ended when Wyatt was dismissed for 59 off 33 balls by Tuba Hassan.
Captain Knight came out next but could not contribute much as she was dismissed for 4 off 6, however, Sciver-Brunt (unbeaten 81 off 40) continued her magnificent innings at the other end. She found a new partner in Amy Jones (47 off 31) as they launched an all-out attack and added 95 runs in just 48 balls to take England to a monumental total of 213/5.
Pakistan fall like dominoes
Pakistan’s chase began in the worst possible manner as opener Sadaf Shamas was dismissed for a duck by Katherine Sciver-Brunt. The entire Pakistan batting unit succumbed under pressure as they fell like dominoes and could only manage to score only 99/9 in their allotted 20 overs, handing a 114-run win England.
Katherine was the pick of the bowlers for England as she picked 2/14 in his four overs. Apart from her, Charlotte Dean also picked up two wickets. Meanwhile, with this win England finished on top of Group B, having won all four matches.
It is noteworthy to mention that England and India have already qualified for the semifinals against their respective counterparts, while only Australia has qualified from the Group 1.
Here's how Twitter reacted to England's dominating win:
Blame the system that doesn’t believe women’s cricket is worth investing in, but also expects the team to win or ‘fight’ every world cup. What a grand embarrassment.
