The exhilarating action continued in the IPL 2023 as Chennai Super Kings hosted Delhi Capitals in match No. 55 of the season on Wednesday, May 10, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. The MS Dhoni-led side took another step towards playoffs qualification as it beat DC by 27 runs.
CSK captain MS Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat first, and openers Devon Conway (10 off 13) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (24 off 18) got their team off to a decent start adding 32 runs off 25 balls for the first wicket. While Gaikwad looked in good touch, Conway was seen struggling in the middle as he survived some close calls during his stay at the crease. Axar Patel drew the first blood for DC as he dismissed both Gaikwad and Conway in his first two overs.
Kuldeep Yadav and Lalit Yadav further tightened the grip on CSK in the middle overs after the two early blows by dismissing Moeen Ali (7 off 12) and Ajinkya Rahane (21 off 20), respectively. Some cameos from Shivam Dube (25 off 12), Ambati Rayudu (23 off 17), Ravindra Jadeja (21 off 16) and MS Dhoni (20 off 9) helped their side finish on 167/8 in their allotted 20 overs.
Mitchell Marsh (3/18, 3 overs) finished as the pick of the bowlers for DC, while Axar Patel also scalped 2/27 in his four-over spell.
In reply, Delhi got off to a miserable start as captain David Warner (0 off 2) hit one straight at cover against Deepak Chahar in the first over itself. Chahar struck again in his second over and got rid of the dangerous Philip Salt (17 off 11). DC further lost another big wicket of Mitchell Marsh (5 off 4) as some miscommunication between the batters resulted in his run-out, with DC left reeling at 25/3 after 3.1 overs.
DC succumb to some tight bowling by CSK
Seeing their team in trouble, Rilee Rossouw and Manish Pandey (27 off 29) added run-a-ball 59 runs for the fourth wicket. Their partnership was broken courtesy of an excellent yorker by Matheesha Pathirana, which sent Pandey packing. Rossouw (35 off 37) also was dismissed quickly getting caught at long-on against Ravindra Jadeja. Following their dismissals, the rest of the batting failed to keep up with the required run-rate with only Axar Patel (21 off 12) showing some fight.
As a result, DC could only manage to reach 140/8 in their allotted 20 overs and handed a 27-run victory to CSK. Matheesha Pathirana (3/37) finished as the pick of the bowlers for Chennai, while Deepak Chahar (2/28, 3 overs) and Jadeja (1/19) were also among the wickets.
Meanwhile, Twitter was abuzz with reactions tk another thumping victory by CSK.
